How to Revise WAEC Chemistry Equations Without Mixing Reagents

A notebook system for reactions, conditions, and the questions that punish vague answers.

Chemistry revision collapses when reactions live in one undifferentiated list. Bromine water, acidified dichromate, and a silver-mirror test are different jobs. If they share a page without conditions, you will write the neighbour's reagent under time. The notebook has to do the sorting now.

Revising equations is not the same as collecting them. You need a system that stores the reaction, the conditions, and the kind of question that usually follows. Without that, reagents blur. Sodium, sodium hydroxide, and sodium carbonate start to feel interchangeable because they all have sodium in them. They are not interchangeable in a mark scheme.

Columns that stop neighbour reagents

Use a double-page spread for each topic cluster: acids and bases, redox, organic functional groups, salts and solubility, electrolysis, and air and water if they are on your syllabus. Left page: balanced equations you have actually met in class or in past theory questions. Right page: conditions, observations, and the typical command, such as write an equation, state what is observed, or explain why. The right page is where mixing is prevented.

Write conditions on the same line as the arrow, not in a footnote you will skip. Warm with acidified potassium manganate(VII) is part of the reaction. Catalyst: nickel, heat is part of hydrogenation. If two reactions share reactants but differ only in concentration or temperature, put them on consecutive lines and underline the difference. That underline is the revision.

Observations belong with equations whenever the paper might ask what would be seen. A colour change, a precipitate, a gas that relights a splint, or a gas that turns limewater milky is often a separate mark from the formula. If your notebook only has formulae, you will invent an observation in the hall. Invented colours are easy to spot.

Organic chemistry needs extra columns: functional group, reagent and condition, product, and a note of what the question might ask instead of the equation, such as isomer names, or why a reaction is substitution not addition. Mixing reagents here is common: bromine water, acidified dichromate, and silver-mirror tests are different tools. Give each its own box. Do not list them as oxidising agents and hope.

Gas tests deserve their own mini-spread because they are mixed more than almost any other set. Hydrogen pops with a lighted splint. Oxygen relights a glowing splint. Carbon dioxide turns limewater milky. Ammonia turns red litmus blue and has a sharp smell. Write the test beside the reaction that produces the gas, not on a separate page you will not open. When a question asks you to identify a gas from an observation, you are using that spread, not a neighbouring equation you almost remember.

Practise recalling from a blank page. Cover the right side and write conditions from the equation. Cover the left and write the equation from the conditions. Mixing happens when you only reread. Testing both directions shows you whether the pair is actually stored.

When you meet a past question, copy the verb into your notebook beside the reaction. Deduce the formula, construct a balanced equation, explain why the mixture is heated, and name the gas are different tasks using the same chemistry. A student who can write the equation may still miss the observation mark. Your system should make that obvious.

Speech test once a week

Balance as a habit, including state symbols when your teacher uses them. An unbalanced equation can lose the mark even when the species are right. Count atoms. If you cannot balance, you may have the wrong product, which is a clue that you mixed the reaction with a neighbour.

Do not build the notebook from rumoured expo lists or from copying a classmate's entire booklet the night before a test. Build it from class notes, the textbook your school uses, and questions you have attempted. A thinner book you can explain aloud is worth more than a thick one you cannot.

Once a week, pick five reactions and teach them to a wall or a classmate in full sentences: reactants, conditions, products, observation. Speech exposes the missing condition faster than silent reading. If you cannot say dilute or concentrated without looking, that reaction is not ready.

Vague answers in the paper sound like the acid reacts with the metal to form a salt and a gas. Sometimes the question accepts that at a low mark. Often it wants the equation. If the question says write a balanced chemical equation, words will not replace it. If it says state what is observed, the equation will not replace the colour. Match the product to the verb.

Keep a small do-not-confuse list at the back: pairs you have already mixed, such as the tests for hydrogen and oxygen, or the products of complete and incomplete combustion. Add a pair only after you have mixed it once. That list is personal and therefore useful.

Open a topic and you should see a labelled tool: reaction, conditions, observation, and the question it usually serves. If you still have a shopping list, sort it before the next extra class, not in the hall.
