How to Turn Class Notes Into Exam Answers

Promote examples, rewrite headings as questions, and drop the decoration.
Notes are a draft. An exam answer is a product a stranger can tick. Promote the worked examples, rewrite headings as command-word questions, and drop the flowers in the margin. Familiarity with coloured pages is not a command word.
Promote examples
Start by choosing one topic, not a whole term. Open the notes and mark every worked example with a star. Examples are the part of the lesson that already looks like an answer. Copy each starred example onto a fresh page with the question above it, then cover the working and redo it. If you cannot redo it, the notes were a recording, not a skill. Recordings comfort. Skills mark.
Rewrite every heading as a question the paper might actually ask. Photosynthesis becomes What happens to water and carbon dioxide in a green plant, and what conditions are named. The Slave Trade becomes Give two reasons why... and Outline the effects on... Command words matter more than the pretty title the teacher wrote in capitals. If you do not know the likely command words for your subject, look at one official specimen or a school test, not at a rumour. Then write those command words above your notes.
Drop the decoration. Hearts in the margin, five colours of pen, and a border of flowers are memory cues for some people and delay for most. They are not transferable to a booklet that allows blue or black ink. When you rewrite, use one pen and the structure the marker expects: definition or law, then working or points, then a sentence that answers the question in plain words. If a diagram is required, draw it large enough to label. A tiny decorated diagram is still an unmarked diagram.
Promote examples by changing the numbers or the names. If the class example used 12 N, try 18 N. If the essay plan used a market scene, try a school compound. Transfer is the test of whether an example has become a method. Students who can only reproduce the chalkboard numbers are one digit change away from a blank. Blank is what the booklet looks like when the example stayed a photograph.
Build a short answer skeleton for each question type your paper uses. For explain, the skeleton might be: name the factor, say what it does, say the result. For calculate, it might be: formula, substitution, working, unit. For literature, it might be: point, short quotation, effect on the reader. Write the skeleton at the top of the rewritten page. In the hall you will not have the coloured notes. You will have the skeleton if you practised it until it is boring.
Turn teacher talk into markable sentences. He said this is important becomes a fact with a name, a date, or a condition. Important is not a point. If you cannot find the fact, ask in the next lesson with the page open. Notes that remain as he said this is important are souvenirs. Souvenirs do not convert. Conversion is the whole craft of this page.
Answer shape, not a shorter draft
Practise writing the answer in the time the paper will give, not in the time a reread takes. A reread of three pages can take eight minutes and still produce a weak paragraph. A four-minute written answer from the rewritten page tells you the truth. Mark it against the skeleton. Missing unit, missing quotation, missing therefore — those are the next rewrite, not a reason to add another colour to the original notes.
Keep the original notes. You are not throwing away the draft. You are making a second document that can travel to the exam. Some students call this a summary. Summary is the wrong word if it is only shorter. It must be in answer shape. A shorter decoration is still decoration. Answer shape has a question at the top and a finish line at the bottom that a stranger could tick.
For subjects with definitions, write the definition from memory, then compare. Fix the missing word that carries the mark — the word only, the word aqueous, the word narrator. Then write a one-line example that is not the class example. Definitions without examples die in application questions. Application questions are where notes that were only copied show their gap.
If your notes are incomplete because you were absent, do not decorate the gap. Borrow a clean copy, rewrite the missing heading as a question, and attempt one example before the next lesson. Incomplete notes that are highlighted become a false map. False maps are worse than a blank page, because they persuade you that the territory was visited.
Once a week, pick three rewritten pages and give them to a classmate to mark with a tick or a question mark only. A question mark means the sentence is not yet an answer. Pride in neat originals should not block this. The classmate is simulating a marker who was not in the room when the joke was funny. Markers were not in the room.
A stranger who missed the lesson should be able to mark the rewritten page. If it still needs the teacher's voice in your memory, it is still a draft. Rewrite one topic this week, not a whole term.
