How to Recover After a Bad Mock Exam

2026-07-15 · 9 min

Read the script, rebuild one skill, and stop treating mocks as a verdict.

A mock number is a map, not a prophecy. Read the script, count the error types, rebuild the type that moved the most marks, and do that on fresh items. A theatrical new timetable that dies in four days is not recovery.

Wait until you have the script or a detailed mark breakdown before you redesign your life. A rank without a script is a rumour about yourself. Rumours are not actionable. If the school will not return scripts, ask for the topics that leaked and for one example item. Teachers can usually say you lost the summary, or constructions, or the explain items in Social Studies. That sentence is the beginning of a plan. The rank is not.

Count error types

Read the script with a pencil, not with shame. Shame skips pages. A pencil circles error types: misread command word, blank, no unit, no ending on the story, shading drift, invented fact. Count the types. The type with the highest count is the skill to rebuild first, even if it is unglamorous. Unglamorous skills — units, endings, shading — often moved more marks than the chapter you feared. Rebuild the mover.

One skill means one. If you try to repair English, Mathematics, and your character in the same weekend, you will repair nothing and announce that mocks are useless. Useless is a story that protects the ego. The mock was useful the moment it showed a type. Write the type on a card: last ten minutes sweep, or word problems translation line, or explain plus example. Put the card on the desk. Everything else is later.

Rebuild on a clock with new items of the same type, not by stroking the mock until you hate it. The mock already happened. Doing it again without a new method is how you memorise a particular wrongness. Three fresh questions, marked, with the new method visible, are a rebuild. If you cannot yet do three, do one with notes open, then one with notes closed. Closed is the goal. Open is allowed on day one of recovery.

Talk to a person with the script open. A teacher, a classmate who will not mock you, a parent who can listen to a type instead of a lecture. I missed four explain items because I only stated. That sentence invites a lesson. I am a failure does not. Failure talk makes adults talk about trying. Type talk makes adults talk about because and example. You need the second conversation.

If the mock was bad because you arrived late or wrote in the wrong booklet section, that is a logistics type. Rebuild it with a packing list and a door-time, not with another chapter of the subject you already knew.

Sleep and food are part of recovery because a mock often sits in a week of poor sleep. A rebuilt skill in a still-exhausted body will look like the mock again. Two ordinary nights are a study method. So is not skipping breakfast on the next timed practice. The next timed practice should be short: the rebuilt skill only, not a full second mock the next morning. Full second mocks too soon repeat the verdict feeling and skip the rebuild.

One skill, fresh items

If the mock was bad because of a blank panic, practise starting. Opening a booklet and writing the first easy item within two minutes is a drill. Panic often lives in the first five minutes, when the paper looks like a wall. A wall is a story. A first easy item is a door. Doors can be rehearsed with any old paper: find a question you can start, start it, then stop. The stop is allowed in practice. The start is the skill.

Comparisons with friends will arrive without your permission. You can refuse to rank yourself in the group chat. Other people's numbers do not name your error type. A friend with a higher score may have leaked the skill you already own and owned the skill you leaked. Swapping scripts, if the school allows, is more useful than swapping ranks. Ranks are theatre. Scripts are maps.

Put the mock in a folder and give it a date. You may return in two weeks to see whether the same type still leaks. Returning is allowed. Living in the folder is not. Living in the folder is how a single Saturday becomes a personality. You are not your mock. You are the next three marked questions of the named type. That sentence is arrogant on purpose. You need a little arrogance to leave the verdict.

If several subjects were bad, sequence the rebuilds: this week the highest-count type in the nearest paper, next week the next. Sequence is kindness. Simultaneous repair is how students disappear into extra classes and still cannot name what they are repairing. Name it. Sequence it. Tick it.

Name the type in one line on the cover of the next book: I will translate before I compute, or I will leave ten minutes for blanks. Then do three fresh items of that type, marked. The mock number can stay on the mock.
