How to Check Your Work in the Last 10 Minutes of an Exam

The last ten minutes are a sweep for blanks, units, and the command word you misread. They are not extra drafting time. Write the sweep list on the question paper in the first minute, because heads at the end of a paper are noisy.

Blanks, units, misread

First sweep: unanswered numbers. Flip every page. Circle any question number with no ink. Attempt the parts you can: a definition, a formula, a labelled diagram, a one-line plan. A part-answer can still take part-marks. A blank cannot. If two blanks remain, choose the one with more marks, not the one that feels more like your personality. Personality is not in the mark scheme.

Second sweep: units and labels. In calculations, check that the final line has the unit the question named. In graphs, check axis labels and the unit in brackets. In biology diagrams, check that the label line touches the part. A correct number with no unit is a half-finished product. The last ten minutes exist for half-finished products. They do not exist for starting a new essay style.

Third sweep: the question you misread. Look only at command words and constraints: not, except, two reasons, with reference to the passage, give your answer in standard form. Misreading is the most expensive error because the writing can be excellent and still be the wrong task. If you find a misread and there is time, add the missing task in the remaining space and put a clear arrow. Do not scribble over a page of working so that nothing can be marked.

Candidate details belong in the sweep. A booklet without a name is a different disaster from a missing unit. Check the cover when you still have minutes, not when the invigilator is collecting.

Check transferred numbers. If step two used 3.6 and the question gave 3.8, the rest may be method marks with a factual bruise, or it may be a wreck. Fixing an early copy error can rescue a whole question in one minute. This is why you should not fill every second of the paper with new sentences. One minute of arithmetic rescue can outweigh three extra lines of an already complete letter.

In language papers, the sweep is different but still a sweep. Count the number of points in a summary against the question. Look at the address and closing of a letter. Check that a composition has an ending, even a short one. An unfinished story with a last line is kinder to a marker than a story that stops in a corridor. Add the last line. Then stop decorating.

Multiple-choice is a different sweep

Do not use the last ten minutes to recopy a whole answer neatly unless the original is actually illegible. Recopying is how students run out of time with a beautiful half. Put a single line through a wrong attempt and write the correction nearby. Markers are used to messy rescue. They are not used to a blank where a messy rescue could have been.

Watch the room's clock and your own watch if you have one, because they can disagree. When the invigilator says ten minutes, believe the invigilator. Start the sweep even if you are mid-sentence. Mid-sentence can be finished in twenty seconds after the blanks are hunted. Blanks cannot be hunted after pens down. Pens down is a hard wall. Your attachment to a paragraph is not.

If you finish earlier than ten minutes, do not leave the hall in your mind. Early finishers invent errors by rewriting working they already did correctly. Use extra time for the same sweeps, slower, and for your candidate details. Then sit. Sitting is part of the method. Restless rewriting is how a correct 4 becomes an incorrect 9.

Multiple-choice papers need a particular sweep: unanswered bubbles, double bubbles, and questions you flagged. A flagged question should be visited before you start changing answers you were confident about. Confidence changes at the end of a paper are often fatigue wearing a costume. Fatigue likes to pick a different option because it looks fresh. Fresh is not a reason.

Practise the sweep on timed past questions at home so it feels ordinary. Ordinary methods survive noise. If you never practise ending, you will only know how to continue. Continuing is the habit that wastes the last ten minutes. Put a timer at forty minutes for a fifty-minute homework paper and force the sweep. The discomfort is the lesson.

When the invigilator says ten minutes, hunt blanks first, then units, then one possible misread. Mid-sentence can wait twenty seconds. Blanks cannot wait until pens down.
