How to Write BECE Social Studies Answers That Score

Point, explain, example — and the waffle that examiners skip.
Social Studies waffle sounds busy and has no handle. Our country must unite for development is a sermon. One cause of rural-urban migration is the search for jobs, because…, for example… is a mark. Number the packages. Stop when the question's count is met.
Handles, not sermons
Read the verb. State and list want short points. Explain, describe, outline, and discuss want the point plus a because and, often, an illustration. Give four ways is four small packages, not one speech and three leftovers. Number them. A numbered point can be found. A river of patriotism cannot.
The point should be a complete idea in one sentence: One cause of rural-urban migration is the search for jobs. That sentence can be ticked. A sentence that only says migration is a problem cannot. If you cannot name the idea in one line, you are not ready to explain it. Find the name first. Names come from the topics your teacher taught: environment, governance, culture, production, socialisation — the headings in your notes, not a radio slogan.
Explain means add the mechanism. People move because wages and vacancies are believed to be better in the town, so households send a young worker. The because is the second mark in many schemes. Without it you have only stated. Students who fear writing long answers often stop at the heading and then pad with in the society. Padding is waffle. Mechanism is not long. It is one extra clause.
Definitions still want class and feature. Socialisation is the process by which people learn the values and norms of their society. Like greeting elders is an example. Put the example after, if asked. Mixing them loses the definition tick and may still miss the example tick.
The example should be possible and local enough to be believed: a market day, a district assembly project, a school farm, a named festival, a bus route that failed in the rains. You do not need a famous politician. You need a concrete picture that fits the point. An example that would still work if you changed the town is usually a real example. An example that is only as we all know is usually waffle wearing shoes.
Drop the opening that restates the question for six lines. The marker knows the question. Your first useful line is the first numbered point. Drop also the closing that says in conclusion education is the key if the question was about weathering. Conclusions that do not match the question are leftover speeches from another topic. Leftovers cost time. Time is marks on a paper with many short items.
When a question asks for advantages and disadvantages, do not let the second half collapse into but it is also bad. Give parallel packages. If you offered two developed advantages, offer two developed disadvantages. Uneven lists look like you ran out of content. Running out is better admitted by stopping after honest points than by inventing a third disadvantage that contradicts the first advantage and confuses the scheme.
Definitions in Social Studies still want the class of thing and the distinguishing feature, not an example pretending to be a definition. Socialisation is the process by which people learn the values and norms of their society is a definition. Like greeting elders is an example. Put the example after, if the question asked for it. Mixing them loses the definition mark and still may not buy the example mark.
Practise with a three-box template in your book. Box one: point. Box two: because. Box three: example. Fill twelve boxes a week from old school tests. Then write the same content as a clean numbered answer without the boxes. The boxes are training wheels. In the hall you will not draw them, but your sentences will still come in threes. Threes are what a fast marker can tick.
Glance at the clock after the first three questions. Item 1 can seduce you into a page and leave item 6 blank. Short complete packages across the paper beat one beautiful sermon.
Use the language of the subject without stuffing. Words like constitution, sanitation, revenue, and ethnic group are tools if you can define them. They are decoration if you sprinkle them into a sentence about unity. One correct term in a clear sentence beats three terms in a fog. Fog is how waffle hides.
If you do not remember a fact, do not invent a law or a date. Invented dates are how a decent explanation becomes a wrong script. Describe the role instead: the local authority that collects some rates and maintains some roads. Role descriptions can still mark. Wrong years can unmark a good mechanism.
Past questions are useful as verb practice. Cover the answers, write four explained points, then compare. Ask whether each point had a because and whether the example was doing work. If four points were actually one point repeated with different adjectives, you have waffle in a numbered costume. Adjectives are not new points. New points change the mechanism or the actor.
Point, because, example — numbered. If four points are one idea with different adjectives, you still have waffle. Adjectives are not new mechanisms.
