Process answers are sequence, conditions, and a last sentence that names what was obtained. We put the mixture and got the water is a movie review. First crushed, then heated, condensed, tested with limewater, therefore the liquid is water is a process.

Start by naming the process in the first line if the question has not already named it for you. Distillation, photosynthesis, rusting, digestion โ€” the name is a signpost. Then refuse to write a story about the laboratory. Stories include we were excited and the beaker was big. Signposts include crushed, heated, condensed, tested with. Verbs that a marker can tick are usually the ones a practical book already uses. Borrow those verbs. Leave the excitement in the corridor.

Sequence and conditions

Sequence words are cheap and they earn order marks. First, then, next, finally are enough. Meanwhile is useful when two things happen together, such as heating while stirring. Do not invent a poetic order. If the syllabus process has a standard order, use it. Heating before adding a catalyst, or adding a catalyst before heating, can be different science. Order is not a writing flourish. Order is the experiment.

State conditions as if they were ingredients. Temperature, catalyst, light, oxygen, pH, time โ€” whatever the process needs. A step without its condition is a ghost step. Photosynthesis without light is a different sentence. Haber process without pressure is a different factory. If you cannot remember a number, remember the qualitative condition: high temperature, limited air, excess acid. Qualitative conditions still mark. Invented numbers that are wrong can unmark a good sequence.

Say what happens to the materials, not only what you do with the apparatus. Apparatus is the cup. Materials are the drink. The copper carbonate is heated is stronger than we use a Bunsen burner if the question is about the chemical change. Burners matter when the question is a practical method. Chemical change matters when the question is a process in the world or in a reaction scheme. Match the verb to the paper.

Include a test or an observation where the process is identified by a result. Limewater turning milky, a pop sound, a colour change, a precipitate โ€” these are the process speaking back. Without the observation, you have described a recipe and not shown that it worked. Markers look for the speaking-back sentence. Put it near the step that produces the gas or the colour, not in a heap at the end unless the question asks for results separately.

In biology, name the organ at the step where it acts. Floating enzymes with no location sound scientific and miss a mark. In physics, keep quantity names stable: if you start with current, do not switch to electricity as a vague synonym in the next line. Followable sequences get the benefit of the doubt on handwriting. Unfollowable ones do not.

The conclusion sentence closes the mark by answering the question's purpose. If you were asked to explain how pure water is obtained from a salt solution, the last line should say that the liquid collected is water and the salt remains. If you stop at the condenser, you have described furniture. Furniture is not the point. The point is the separation. Write the point in plain words after the steps, even if it feels obvious. Obvious to you is not obvious on a script the marker reads at speed.

Avoid the we did it in class shortcut. In class is not a step. Also avoid and so on. And so on is a hole. If there are five steps, write five, or write the ones the marks require and stop. Stopping is allowed. Holes are not. A short complete sequence beats a long sequence that skips the condition in the middle and hopes the marker will fill it from memory of a good student. Markers fill nothing from your reputation.

The conclusion names the product

Draw only if a diagram earns more than it costs in time. A labelled diagram of distillation can carry steps that your sentences then support. An unlabelled sketch wastes the minute. Labels should be the same words as the sentences: flask, vapour, condenser, distillate. If your diagram and your sentences use different names for the same thing, you have written two processes. Two processes confuse a tired marker.

Practise by covering a textbook diagram and writing the steps in four minutes, then checking conditions. Four minutes is closer to exam life than an evening of copying. After checking, rewrite only the missing condition and the conclusion sentence. Those two are the usual leaks. Students leak conditions because they can see the apparatus in memory. Memory is visual. Marks are verbal. Translate.

In biology processes, name the organ or cell part at the step where it acts. In the mouth, chewing increases surface area; in the stomach, acid... Location is a condition of a kind. Floating enzymes with no organ are a common way to lose a mark while still sounding scientific. Sounding scientific is a fog. Location plus action plus result is a step.

Briefly is not a composition. Three or four sequenced sentences plus a conclusion can be brief and complete. In detail means add conditions and the observation, not the day of the week you saw the demonstration.
