Week-by-week topic blocks, past-question practice, and how to stop skipping the papers you fear.

An eight-week maths chart that only says Maths in every box is a poster, not a plan. Name the week by topic or the feared paper will slide to later, and later will be the night before Paper 2. The sequence below assumes you can give the subject about forty-five honest minutes on school days, not a heroic dawn you have never kept.

WAEC Mathematics is a stack of skills that depend on each other. If number work is shaky, algebraic fractions collapse. If you cannot find a bearing, the trigonometry word problem becomes a drawing you abandon. A plan that hops randomly between topics feels busy and leaves the same holes. You need blocks, then mixed practice, then a week that only repairs what the mixed papers exposed.

Weeks 1–4: number through data

Week 1 belongs to number and numeration. Fractions, ratios, percentages, standard form, and number bases appear both as short items and as the arithmetic inside later questions. Sit a set of old objective items on these, then two structured questions. Write every line. If you reach for a calculator in a section that does not allow one, you have found a weakness, not a shortcut.

Week 2 is algebraic processes: simplification, factorisation, equations, change of subject, and variation. Many candidates can expand a bracket and still cannot solve a worded equation because they never translate the sentence into symbols. Practise that translation with market and age problems from old papers. Mark the method, not only the final boxed number.

Week 3 covers mensuration and plane geometry: areas, volumes, angles in polygons, and circle theorems if they are on your syllabus. Draw the figure every time, even when the paper already printed one. Label what you know. A blank diagram is how people lose the first two marks before they start calculating.

Week 4 is statistics and probability: mean, median, mode, pie charts, histograms, and simple probability. Show the formula and the substitution. Examiners award process marks when the arithmetic slips but the steps are present. They cannot award them when only a lonely wrong total sits on the page.

Week 5 is trigonometry, bearings, and, where your syllabus includes them, graphs of sine and cosine. Sketch the north line. State whether you are using sine, cosine, or tangent before you punch numbers. Wrong-ratio errors are common and expensive. Do at least one bearing question every other day this week so the diagram becomes automatic.

Week 6 gathers sets, functions, and remaining algebra such as simultaneous equations and quadratic graphs. This is also the week to stop saying you do not do constructions. Book a long session with compass and ruler. Construction questions are slow if you have not touched the instruments since junior school. They are routine if you have.

Mixed papers, then repair

Week 7 is mixed timed papers. Sit one Paper 1 and one Paper 2 under exam timing, on separate days. Do not pause to look up a formula. After marking, list every question you skipped or guessed. Those titles become the only topics for Week 8. A mixed paper is a diagnosis. It is wasted if you only count the score and hide the script.

Week 8 is repair, not a new syllabus. Re-teach yourself the two or three topics that leaked the most marks. Then sit the feared paper type again: the construction, the proof-style geometry, or the long statistics question you always left blank. Finishing an eight-week plan means you met the question you used to turn past, not that you highlighted a textbook from cover to cover.

Formulae that live only on a phone wallpaper are not available when phones are collected. Write the week’s formulae on the inside cover of the exercise book and cover them during the timed set. Retrieval from the cover is closer to the hall than a lock-screen you will not have.

Daily timing matters as much as the weekly label. Forty-five focused minutes with a closed phone beat three hours of Maths with chat in another tab. Start with a warm-up of five short items, then one longer question, then mark immediately. Immediate marking is how you catch a repeated slip, such as forgetting to convert centimetres to metres.

When you skip a topic because it scares you, you are training the exam hall to scare you in the same place. Put the feared question first twice a week, while you still have energy. If you cannot start it, write the first diagram and the first formula anyway. Starting is a skill. Blank pages earn nothing.
